BackgroundPRMT6, or Protein arginine N-methyltransferase 6, is part of the PRMT family that catalyzes the methylation of arginine residues. PRMT6 specifically coregulates gene expression by acting as an activator and repressor via dimethylation of Histone H3R2me2a. PRMT6 methylates several histones at various residues, particularly Histone H2AR3me, Histone H3K4me2, Histone H3K4me3, as well as Histone H4R3me. By transcriptionally repressing tumor suppressor genes, PRMT6 has been shown to regulate cell proliferation and senescence and, via interactions with Rev, Nucleocapsid protein p7, and Tat, PRMT6 might also be implicated in innate immunity against HIV-1.
