Epigentek's anti-5-hydroxymethyluridine recognizes 5-hydroxymethyluridine, which is created by the oxidation of thymine by ionizing radiation or reactive oxygen species. This oxidation effect causes changes in gene expression, mutations, and chromosomal instability -- all of which play a role in cancer, autoimmune disease, and aging. 5-hydroxymethyluridine is a potential biomarker for female breast, colon, and rectal cancers, being present at elevated levels, possibly due to impaired DNA repair mechanisms.
