BackgroundUBE2D1 (ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2D 1) is a protein coding gene. Proteins modified with ubiquitin are able to target abnormal or short-lived proteins for degradation. Ubiquitination uses three classes of enzymes: ubiquitin-activating enzymes (E1s), ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes (E2s), and ubiquitin-protein ligases (E3s). UBE2D1 encodes a member of the E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. This enzyme is similar to a stimulator of iron transport (SFT), and is also up-regulated in hereditary hemochromatosis. UBE2D1 functions in the ubiquitination of protein p53, a tumor-suppressor protein, and HIF1alpha by interacting with E1 and E3. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
