BackgroundING2 (Inhibitor of growth protein 2) belongs to the inhibitor of growth (ING) family and contains a PHD-type zinc finger. It is part of the MSinA-like corepressor complex that is believed to be involved in deacetylation of nucleosomal histones. ING2 is thought to be involved in p53/TP53 activation and p53/TP53-dependent apoptotic pathways, most likely through enhancing acetylation of p53/TP53. Primarily a nuclear protein, this gene is localized to chromatin and the nuclear matrix. ING2 may be released from chromatin and translocated to the cytoplasm. High levels of expression of ING2 are associated with colon cancer tumors.
