BackgroundH3F3B, also known as H3 Histone Family 3B (H3.3B), is a variant histone H3 which, in a variety of nucleosomes in active genes, replaces histone H3. It is thought that H3F3B is an epigenetic imprint of chromatin that is transcriptionally active because it is found deposited at locations of nucleosomal displacement throughout transcribed genes. Involved in wrapping and compacting DNA into chromatin, histones can open or close chromatin and play a crucial role in the regulation of transcription via post-translational histone modifications. Other processes histones are involved in include DNA repair, chromosomal stability, and DNA replication.
