Background MBD3L1, or methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 3-like 1, is a protein related to methyl-CpG-binding proteins but has not been shown to bind to methylated DNA because it lacks the methyl-CpG binding domain. Located in discrete areas within the nucleus, evidence suggests its expression is restricted to round spermatids. MBD3L1 is thought to play a role in male germ cell development during the postmeiotic stages.
