Histone proteins (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) are the core components of a nucleosome and compact DNA into chromatin. Transcription regulation is affected depending on the availability of the chromatin structure, adjusted by post-translational modifications to histones – such as histone acetylation – and remodeling of nucleosomes. Histone acetyltransferases (HATs) act to acetylate histone H2A at lysine 5.
