PRMTs (Protein Arginine N-Methyltransferases) can monomethylate or dimethylate arginine residues by transferring methyl groups from S-adenoxylmethionine to the guanidine nitrogen of arginine. PRMT1, also known as Protein Arginine N-Methyltransferase 1, has been shown to play a role in transcriptional regulation, specifically methylating Histone H4R3 and acting alongside p300/CBP. It is also able to methylate non-histone proteins. PRMT1 is implicated in other activities such as signal transduction, mRNA processing, and p53-mediated transcription.
