BackgroundGCN5, a putative transcriptional adapter in humans and yeast, possesses histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity. GCN5 HATs operate in multisubunit complexes (e.g., SAGA and ADA) to acetylate lysine residues in histone tails, preferentially those of histone H3. Also, GCN5 is required for the activation of a number of genes involved in amino acid biosynthesis, respiration, and other pathways controlled by the SWI/SNF gene products.
