BackgroundThe protein resulting from this gene's encoding is a member of the SWI/SNF protein family and shares similarity with Drosophila's brahma protein. This family of proteins possesses helicase and ATPase activities, presumed to control gene transcription by modifying the chromatin structure surrounding those genes. The protein encoded here is a component of the extensive ATP-dependent chromatin remodeling complex SNF/SWI, necessary for activating the transcription of genes that are typically suppressed by chromatin. Moreover, this protein has the ability to bind BRCA1 and regulate the expression of the tumorigenic protein CD44. Genetic mutations in this gene are linked to rhabdoid tumor predisposition syndrome type 2. Several transcript variants, resulting in distinct isoforms, have been identified for this gene.
