BackgroundHistones, fundamental nuclear proteins in eukaryotes, contribute to the nucleosome arrangement in the chromosomal fiber. Each of the four core histones (H2A, H2B, H3, and H4) forms an octamer, creating a foundation around which approximately 146 base pairs of DNA are coiled into recurring units known as nucleosomes. The linker histone, H1, interacts with DNA between nucleosomes, aiding in the compacting of chromatin into more complex structures. This particular gene lacks introns and encodes a replication-dependent histone belonging to the histone H1 family. Despite transcripts from this gene not having polyA tails, they possess a palindromic termination element. This gene is located within the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6.
