BackgroundThis gene plays a pivotal role in viral assembly by packaging the positive-strand viral genome RNA into a helical ribonucleocapsid (RNP), interacting crucially with the viral genome and membrane protein M. It enhances the efficiency of subgenomic viral RNA transcription and viral replication. It may interrupt host chemokine functions in vivo, potentially aiding viral replication and transmission. This effect is achieved by secretion into the extracellular space, where it competes with host chemokines for binding to host glycosaminoglycans (GAG). It might trigger inflammasome responses in cultured cells and mice, interacting with host NLRP3 to facilitate inflammasome assembly. This assembly then induces cytokine release, potentially playing a role in COVID lung injury.
