Viral RNA Extraction: Robust Spin-Column & Magnetic Based Kits
With the increasing focus on viral infectious diseases in the wake of the current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we want to ensure researchers have the tools they need to study the RNA that drives the spread and function of these viruses. EpiGentek has been a trusted research kit provider for over 15 years. In that time we have come to understand what researchers are looking for in terms of speed, reproducibility and ease.
That’s why we are offering robust viral RNA extraction kits alongside our cell/tissue RNA extraction kits, for a variety of options for completing the viral RNA preparation your lab needs to move forward with your projects. Each of our kits is designed to extract high-quality resulting RNA that can be used for RT-PCR in addition to a score of other downstream applications. Our kits vary in the method of extraction as well as the type of throughput options (high/manual), so no matter what your lab requires, our kits can help you obtain ready-to-use purified viral RNA.
Our variety of magnetic bead and spin column kits isolate RNA from different sample sources (nasal/nasopharyngeal swabs, cells/tissues) and species (viral, mammalian). Detergents and chaotropic salt are used to lyse cells and inactivate RNases. A specialized high salt buffering system allows RNA bases to bind to the magnetic beads to the glass fiber matrix of the spin columns while contaminants are efficiently washed away. Pure nucleic acid is eluted with an aqueous buffer; phenol extraction or alcohol precipitation are not required.
Viral RNA Extraction Kits
For viral RNA extraction, the P-9107 spin column kit affords the most benefits in terms of ease-of-use, speed, and yield. The P-9109 magnetic bead kit provides the convenience of high throughput sample processing in a 96-well plate setup and is suitable for robot handling or automation setup, without the need for centrifugation. Alternatively, the P-9108 kit can be used for manual magnetic bead isolation of smaller sample sizes. Note that, depending on the desired downstream application, additional virus purification steps may be needed to achieve the required yield and purity. To help you plan your studies accordingly, we've provided an article detailing 10 methods in which this process can be done.
Versatile: allows small size (>30 bases) and large size (<200 kb) to be isolated
Convenient: no need for centrifugation
Size: 50 Samples
Catalog #: P-9108-50
If you would like to order multiple RNA extraction kits, we also make it convenient by allowing you to purchase via a workflow. This way, you can get the assay kits you need and simultaneously view other related kits that may fit your study, including downstream applications like RNA methylation quantification.
Cell/Tissue RNA Extraction Kits
As an alternative to the kits presented above, we also offer kits targeted at isolating RNA derived from mammalian cells and tissue. If your study plans to use cells or tissues as your starting input material, the P-9105 and P-9106 kits provide the same high quality extraction of total RNA via column- and bead-based formats, respectively.

Other RNA Extraction Protocols
The above kits are designed to include all necessary reagents and materials to extract RNA from either viral samples or cells and tissue. There are, however, other viable methods for achieving RNA extraction if your lab has the materials abailable. Below we have included links to a few protocols that we that you can follow to isolate and purify RNA from different sources:
**Note: these are suggested protocols and should be adjusted by the user accordingly**
