BackgroundEED (extraembryonic ectoderm) belongs to the Polycomb-group (PcG) family which is known to form multimeric protein complexes involved in preserving the transcriptional repressive state of genes over succeeding cell generations. It can interact with enhancer of zest 2, the cytoplasmic tail of integrin beta7, the HIV-1 MA protein, and histone deacetylase proteins. EED is believed to directly regulate integrin function and can mediate repression of gene activity via histone deacetylation. Multiple variants encoding different isoforms exist for this gene.
