G9a is a newly identified H3-K9 methyltransferase, which is localized exclusively in euchromatic regions and plays a dominant role in the euchromatic regions of histone H3-K9 methylation. G9a is essential for early embryogenesis and is involved in the transcriptional repression of the developmental genes. G9a also adds methyl groups to the lysine 27 in histone H3. Human G9a maps to chromosome 6p21.3.
