BackgroundUBE2K (ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2K) belongs to the ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme family. This protein interacts with RING finger proteins and can ubiquitinate huntingtin (of Huntigton's Disease). This protein's functions include participation in accumulated formation of expanded polyglutamine proteins and the repression of apoptosis in polyglutamine diseases, participation in the dislocation of newly synthesized MHC class I heavy chains from the endoplasmic reticulum, and a role in foam cell formation. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
