BackgroundMBD5, or methyl-CpG binding domain protein 5, is a part of the methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) family, which also includes MeCP2, MBD1, MBD2, MBD3, MBD4, CLLD8-like, and BAZ2A-like proteins. This protein contains a Pro-Trp-Trp-Pro motif (PWWP) domain as well as the MBD domain. The proteins of the PWWP domain play a role in cell division, cell growth, and cell differentiation. Evidence shows that diseases, such as mental retardation autosomal dominant type 1, can be caused by mutation to the MBD5 gene and some research indicates it may be involved in neurodevelopmental disorders and postnatal growth of mice.
