BackgroundEHMT1 (euchromatic histone-lysine N-methyltransferase 1) is a histone methyltransferase that belongs to the transcriptional repressor E2F6 complex. This protein methylates the Lys-9 position of histone H3, which tags for transcriptional repression by recruiting HP1 proteins to methylated histones. This protein may be involved in silencing MYC- and E2F-responsive genes and is believed to be a part of the G0/G1 cell cycle transition. Chromosome 9q subtelomeric deletion syndrome (9q-syndrome), commonly known as Kleefstra syndrome, is caused by a defect in this gene. Multiple transcription variants exists due to alternative splicing of this gene.
