BackgroundTranscription factor binding protein ATF2 is a member of the leucine zipper family of DNA binding proteins. This protein binds to both AP-1 and CRE DNA response elements. This protein also exhibits histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity, specifically acetylating histones H2B and H4 in vitro. The encoded protein may also be involved in a cell's DNA damage response, independent of its role in transcriptional regulation. Depending on the tissue or cell type, ATF2 can stimulate oncogenic or tumor suppressor activities. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been found for this gene.
