BackgroundThe protein encoded by the gene APRIL (a proliferation-inducing ligand), also known as TNFSF13, is a member of the TNF ligand family. The TNF (tumor necrosis factors) family refers to a group of cytokines that can cause cell death (apoptosis). This protein is involved in B cell development. Experiments done in vitro suggested that this protein may induce apoptosis via its interaction with other TNF receptor family proteins such as TNFRSF6/FAS and TNFRSF14/HVEM. Alternative splicing causes numerous transcript variants. Brain glioblastoma multiforme and glioblastoma multiforme are two diseases associated with this protein.
