BackgroundThromboxane B2 (TXB2) is an inactive metabolite/product of thromboxane A2 (TXA2) - an enzyme involved in platelet aggregation, vasoconstriction and reproductive functions, but also known to be highly unstable under physiological conditions due to its very short half-life. TXB2 and its metabolite 2,3-dinor-TXB2 are released in abundant quantities during platelet aggregation and are commonly used to indirectly measure TXA2 production in vivo. A major metabolite of TXB2, 11-dehydro-TXB2, found in urine and plasma is produced via dehydrogenation by the enzyme 11-OH-dehydrogenase.
