BackgroundTL1A is a cytokine that belongs to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) ligand family. This protein is not expressed in B or T cells, but is liberally expressed in endothelial cells. The expression of this protein is brought on by TNF and IL-1 alpha. TL1A is a receptor for TNFRSF25 and TNFRSF6B. It can initiate NF-kappaB and MAP kinases, and acts as an autocrine factor to induce apoptosis in endothelial cells. TL1A also inhibits endothelial cell proliferation, and may function as an angiogenesis inhibitor. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Diseases associated with TL1A include primary biliary cirrhosis and diverticulitis.
