BackgroundNesfatin-1 is metabolic polypeptide derived from the posttranslational processing of nucleobindin-2 (NUCB2). Originally recognized as a hypothalamic neuropeptide, it is also found in other parts of the brain, the pancreas, gastric endocrine cells and adipocytes. Involved in the regulation of hunger and fat storage, an increase in the Nasfatin-1 in the hypothalamus has been shown to suppress appetite and promote energy expenditure, independent of leptin signaling.
