BackgroundA ceramide is a waxy lipid molecule that is found in high concentration within the cell membranes of cells. They are a component of sphingomyelin, a major lipid in the lipid bilayer. Ceramides and other sphingolipids found in cell membranes can participate in a variety of cellular signaling, including proliferation and differentiation, as well as apoptosis or cell death and cell-cycle arrest.
