BackgroundPRDM9 is a PR-domain containing protein that is believed to function as a transcriptional regulator. It is a histone tri-methyltransferase that consists of three main regions: an amino-terminal region, which contains a KRAB domain and SSX repression domain; a PR/SET domain, surrounded by a pre-SET zinc knuckle and a post-SET zinc finger; and a long carboxy-terminal C2H2 zinc finger array. PRDM9 is distinctly expressed in early meiosis and its deficiency is connected to sterility.
