BackgroundEZH1 is a member of the histone-lysine methyltransferase family (EZ subfamily). It is identified in humans as a homolog of the Drosphila gene enhancer of zeste E(z), which belongs to the polycomb group (PcG) of transcriptional repressors. In mice studies, this protein has been found to regulate homeotic gene expression associated with the assembly of repressive protein complexes in chromatin. EZH1 is necessary for embryonic stem cell derivation and self-renewal and is believed to be an important determinant in maintaining the identity of embryonic stem cells.
