BackgroundThis gene is involved in transcription repression and activation. It can repress transcription independently of histone deacetylase activity and is targeted to replication foci throughout S phase by directly interacting with the N-terminus of DNA methyltransferase 1. Its interaction with HDAC2 may provide a means for histone deacetylation in heterochromatin following replication of DNA at late firing origins. In addition, the encoded protein is a component of the NuA4 histone acetyltransferase (HAT) complex which is involved in transcriptional activation of select genes, primarily through acetylation of H4 and H2, and plays a primary role in transcription, cellular response to DNA damage, and cell cycle control.
