CBX1, or chromobox homolog 1, is a member of the heterochromatin protein family that is associated with centromeres and enriched in the heterochromatin. CBX1 is involved in epigenetic repression by binding to tails of methylated histone H3 at Lys9. Overall, it is thought to play a role in gene expression and chromatin structure.
